Plum Port: A Regressively Designed Residential Space by Ma Shao-Hsuan

A Rustic and Calm Haven in a Petite Space

The interior space of Plum Port is a mere 61 square meters, yet it manages to accommodate two rooms, a living room, a dining room, and a large, unrevealed storage space without altering the existing kitchen and two toilets. The design aims to provide a calm and soothing environment for the user after a long day, while avoiding monotony.

To maximize space utilization, the design incorporates multifunctional wall cabinets that replace traditional walls. These cabinets, in a subtle gray color, not only provide storage but also serve as a design element. Metal cabinets are used to further expand storage options, with red cabinets adding a pop of color to the space. Different metal pegboard door panels are utilized to create various effects of shielding, adding visual interest to the design.

The choice of storage door panels depends on the items being stored, resulting in a combination of different materials in the same tone. This consistent yet interesting technique is applied throughout the entire space, including the configuration of home accessories. The result is a calm and fascinating environment that reflects the designer's vision.

The Plum Port project, led by Ma Shao-Hsuan and assisted by Peng, Yu-Shan, was completed from April 2019 to January 2020. It involved interior design, construction supervision, and furniture configuration. The design team faced the challenge of working with a petite space, requiring careful planning to optimize every area without compromising comfort.

Plum Port's exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through the integration of art, science, design, and technology.
